A long-awaited cleanup project along the banks of the Petaluma River got started last Thursday, as a crane brought in by the Environmental Protection Agency began clearing away some of the debris that has accumulated on a harl sunken barge not far downstream from downtown Petaluma.

It's merely the 4th day of June, and already 2011is going down in the books as one of the wettest Junes on record in the Bay Area.

Demand is high and the costs are relatively low for a new aquaculture crop that holds rich potential for expansion along the North Coast — mussels.

Farming of mussels is not new to North America, says Bodega Bay Marine Lab adviser Paul Olin, but the potentia for growing them in California's coastal waters  remains mostly untapped.
